In the city of Wukro, in the north of the country, stands one of the first mosques of Africa, Al-Nejashi. The mosque houses the tombs of Prophet Muhammad’s followers, who escaped persecution and torture in Mecca.
The mosque has an important significance in Islam since it represents the first hijra (migration). It was on the Prophet’s orders that his companions undertook this journey to establish the first Muslim community in Africa. The king of Ethiopia welcomed them and gave them a safe haven.
