Ankober, once the capital of the Shewa kingdom, was the abode of Ethopian emperors. However, the city lost importance among Ethiopians when it was decided that Addis Ababa would become the capital city of the country. At the top of a hill, on the ruins of King Menelik II’s palace, stands the Ankober Lodge. From there, visitors can take in spectacular views of all of Ethiopia. The place is sacred for Ethiopians, some Shewa emperors were even buried in nearby churches.
